Car rental in Fes FAQ: your questions, our answers
This car rental in Fes FAQ brings together the questions our customers from Europe and Morocco ask us before booking: booking, prices and debit cards, delivery at Fes-Saïss airport, international driving permit, vehicles, road trips, insurance. Every answer is written by the COSTA CAR team, a local agency in Fes (also spelt Fez) rated 4.9/5 from 257 Google reviews. Can’t find yours? Message us on WhatsApp, we reply 7 days a week.
Booking
Booking takes a few minutes, online or on WhatsApp, and no payment is taken before the keys are handed over.
How do I book a car in Fes from the UK, Ireland or anywhere in Europe?
From our list of cars, select a model and then your dates on the calendar: the price of each day is displayed and the all-inclusive total is calculated instantly. Then enter your name and phone number, confirm, and our team gets back to you quickly, in English or French, on WhatsApp or by phone. You can also send your dates and the model you want directly on WhatsApp: we reply 7 days a week, evenings and weekends included.
Do I need to pay anything in advance to hold the booking?
No. No online prepayment is required: the booking is recorded with your dates and your model, then confirmed by our team. Payment is made by bank card, credit or debit, in the driver’s name, and the arrangements are explained to you when we confirm. You therefore remain free to change or cancel if your plans change, without having paid anything in advance.
How far in advance should I book for the summer?
For July, August, school holidays and long weekends, book as soon as your flights are booked: summer is the busiest period and economy city cars, like automatics, go first. Booking early is the best way to get the model you want at the current month’s rate. Out of season, a request the day before, or even on the day, usually works out: message us on WhatsApp to check availability.
What happens after I send my request?
Our team checks the vehicle’s availability on your dates and gets back to you quickly, in English or French, on WhatsApp or by phone. Together we set the place and time of the handover (airport, train station, hotel, riad, home) and, if you arrive by plane, we note your flight number to track its schedule. The confirmation sums up the essentials: model, gearbox, dates, handover location and all-inclusive total price.
Prices and payment
One single price, shown day by day, with no extra line when you collect the keys.
How much does car rental in Fes cost at COSTA CAR?
Our rates start at 220 MAD (≈ 22 €) per day for an economy city car, 300 MAD for an SUV, 300 MAD for the 7-seater and 300 MAD for a premium vehicle, all inclusive. These “from” amounts correspond to the cheapest month of the year; the exact price for your dates is shown on the booking calendar. The breakdown by category is on our prices and cheap car rental in Fes page.
What exactly does the displayed price include?
Full insurance, the additional insurance offered during our current promotion, unlimited mileage, delivery and return anywhere in Fes and at the airport, 24/7 roadside assistance, as well as GPS, a child seat or booster seat and an additional driver. There are no airport fees, no night surcharge and no insurance sold on top when you collect the keys. The amount calculated on the site is therefore the amount you pay.
Do you accept debit cards, or do I need a credit card?
Both. Many travellers only have a debit card (Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard) and sometimes see it refused elsewhere: at COSTA CAR, it is accepted in the same way as a credit card. The only condition is that the card must be in the main driver’s name. Everything is explained on our car rental in Fes with a debit card page.
How is the total calculated if my rental spans two months?
Day by day. Each day is charged at the rate of the month it falls in: June days at the June price, July days at the July price. The calendar shows the price under each date and the summary details the calculation before you confirm, with no rounding against you. The euro estimate (10 MAD ≈ 1 €) is given for guidance only.
Airport and delivery
Free delivery and return, 24/7, at Fes-Saïss airport and in every district of Fes.
How does the key handover work at Fes-Saïss airport?
We do not have a desk in the terminal: a COSTA CAR agent waits for you at the exit of the arrivals hall and walks you to the car, parked in the airport car park. There, you carry out the inspection together, sign the contract and drive off; the airport is around fifteen kilometres south of the city, 20 to 25 minutes from the centre. The full procedure is described on the car rental at Fes airport page.
My flight lands at 1 a.m. or arrives late: is there a surcharge?
None. Airport pick-up operates 24/7, with no night surcharge and no waiting fee. Give us your flight number when you book: we track the actual landing time and move the meeting if the plane is delayed or early. Evening Ryanair, Transavia or Air Arabia flights from Europe are part of our daily routine.
Do you deliver to Fes train station, the medina or my riad?
Yes, free of charge and at any hour. We deliver to Fes train station, the Ville Nouvelle, the city centre, Fes el-Bali (the medina), Narjiss, Bensouda, Montfleuri, the Aïn Chkef road and the Imouzzer road, as well as to your hotel, riad, home or office. For the medina, whose alleyways cannot be reached by car, we agree on a meeting point close to your riad, for example one of the gates or the nearest car park. The list of areas is on our delivery services page.
Can I collect the car at the airport and return it in town, or in another city?
Within Fes, yes and at no charge: the handover and return locations are up to you (airport, train station, hotel, home). For a delivery or return outside Fes, for example in Meknes, Rabat or Casablanca, send us your dates and the location you want on WhatsApp: we will send you a quote based on the distance. Mention this when you book so that we can organise the transfer.
Documents and driving in Morocco
What to bring when you collect the keys, and the basic rules for driving with peace of mind.
What documents do I need to rent a car in Morocco?
Three documents are enough: a valid national driving licence held for more than one year, a passport or national identity card, and a bank card (credit or debit) in the driver’s name. The minimum age is 21. These conditions apply to every driver named on the contract; the full details are on our rental conditions page.
Is an international driving permit compulsory to drive in Morocco?
For a tourist rental, COSTA CAR does not require an international driving permit: your valid UK, Irish, EU, US or Canadian driving licence is enough when you collect the keys. According to the practical information published for travellers, a national driving licence is recognised in Morocco for a leisure stay, up to a limit of one year. An international driving permit, to be applied for in your home country before you leave, remains an optional document that some travellers carry as a precaution; at a checkpoint, what matters is to have with you your original licence, your ID and the vehicle papers handed over at departure.
Can I add a second driver, for example my partner?
Yes, the additional driver is free. They present the same documents as the main driver (licence held for more than one year, ID, minimum age 21) and their name is entered on the contract before departure. Only the people named on the contract are allowed to drive the vehicle. You can add them when you book or let us know on WhatsApp before the keys are handed over.
What driving rules should I know in Morocco (speed limits, checks)?
You drive on the right, as in continental Europe, and road signs are close to European ones. The limits usually posted are 60 km/h in built-up areas, 100 km/h on open roads and 120 km/h on motorways, with lower-limit sections marked by signs; speed cameras and gendarmerie checkpoints are frequent, especially at the entrance to towns, and speeding is fined. Seat belts for all passengers, no handheld phone use, strict respect of the limits: with a recent vehicle and the free GPS, you drive stress-free. Fines incurred during the rental remain the renter’s responsibility.
Vehicles: automatic, SUV, 7-seater, premium
14 recent vehicles, with manual or automatic gearbox, split into four categories.
Do you offer automatic cars in Fes?
Yes: 11 of our 14 models are available with an automatic gearbox. The Clio 5, Corsa and 208 city cars as well as the Duster SUV can be rented in either manual or automatic (choose the option on the car’s page and the price adjusts), while the Tucson, the Formentor and the whole premium range (Ibiza FR, Golf 8.5, A-Class, X2, Q3 Sportback) are automatic as standard. Find them on the automatic car rental in Fes page.
Which SUV should I choose for the Middle Atlas or the desert road?
Our three SUVs are two-wheel drive and perfectly suited to the paved roads of the mountains and the South: the Dacia Duster 2026 (manual or automatic) for the best balance of price and comfort, from 300 MAD (≈ 30 €) per day, the Hyundai Tucson 2026 for space and comfort, the Cupra Formentor 2026 for driving pleasure. We do not offer 4x4s and off-road driving is not allowed: trips into the dunes are done with the local operators on site. Compare them on the SUV rental in Fes page.
Do you have a 7-seater for a family or a group?
Yes, the Dacia Lodgy: seven proper seats, manual gearbox, frugal diesel engine, from 300 MAD (≈ 30 €) per day all inclusive. It is the choice of families travelling with the grandparents and of groups of friends who want just one car; the child seat or booster seat is free. Tell us how many passengers and bags you have: with seven on board, boot space shrinks and we can advise you on how to organise.
What is the difference between your Economy, SUV and Premium categories?
Economy (from 220 MAD): Dacia Logan, Citroën C-Elysée, Renault Clio 5, Opel Corsa and Peugeot 208, frugal city cars perfect for Fes, Meknes and the roads of the Middle Atlas. SUV / Comfort (from 300 MAD): Duster, Tucson and Formentor, for families and long journeys. Premium (from 300 MAD): Seat Ibiza FR, Volkswagen Golf 8.5, Mercedes A 200 AMG, BMW X2 and Audi Q3 Sportback, all automatic, for a business trip or a stay with no compromises. In every case, full insurance, unlimited mileage and delivery are included: only the level of comfort changes. Details on the premium cars in Fes page.
Diesel or petrol: does it matter for my rental?
12 of our 14 vehicles run on diesel (“gasoil” at Moroccan pumps), the others on unleaded petrol: Opel Corsa 2025 and Seat Ibiza FR 2026. Diesel offers a longer range, which is welcome on the road to Merzouga or Chefchaouen, where it is wise to fill up before the long stretches without a town; on the main roads, petrol stations are plentiful. The fuel type is shown on each vehicle page and repeated when the keys are handed over.
Trips and road trips from Fes
Unlimited mileage is included: Fes is an ideal starting point for the Rif, the Middle Atlas and the South.
| Destination | Distance from Fes | Approx. time | Route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meknes | ≈ 60 to 70 km | ≈ 1 h | A2 motorway (toll) |
| Volubilis and Moulay Idriss | ≈ 70 km | ≈ 1 h 15 | Via Meknes |
| Ifrane | ≈ 60 km | ≈ 1 h | Main road, mountains |
| Azrou (cedar forest) | ≈ 80 to 85 km | ≈ 1 h 20 | Via Ifrane |
| Chefchaouen | ≈ 200 km | 3 h to 3 h 30 | Rif roads |
| Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) | ≈ 450 to 460 km | 7 h to 8 h | Azrou, Midelt, Errachidia, Ziz gorges |
| Marrakech | ≈ 460 to 530 km | 5 h 30 to 7 h | Depending on the route chosen |
Can I visit Chefchaouen from Fes in a day?
It is possible but long: allow around 200 km and 3 h to 3 h 30 of driving each way, on Rif mountain roads where you rarely drive fast. The most pleasant option is to leave early, have lunch in the blue medina and stay overnight before coming back, or continue on to Tetouan and Tangier. Unlimited mileage and 24/7 assistance are included; a city car is enough, an SUV brings more comfort in the bends. Our detailed itineraries are in the guides and tips section.
How long does it take to get from Fes to Ifrane and the Azrou cedar forest?
Ifrane is around sixty kilometres south of Fes, about an hour’s drive; Azrou and its cedar forest are some twenty kilometres further on, at around 1 h 20. It is the simplest day trip from Fes, with a city car or an SUV, in any season. In winter, snow is not unusual above 1,600 m: a Duster or a Tucson gives you extra margin on mountain roads, without a 4x4 being necessary on paved routes. Bring warm clothing.
Can I reach Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes with a rental car?
Yes, by the paved road through Azrou, Midelt, Errachidia and the Ziz gorges: around 450 to 460 km and 7 to 8 hours of driving, with a break in Midelt or an overnight stop to enjoy the scenery. A diesel city car or an SUV is fine as far as the village of Merzouga; trips into the dunes are then done with the local operators’ 4x4s, camels or quads, as our vehicles are two-wheel drive and off-road driving is not allowed. Tell us your itinerary: 24/7 roadside assistance can be reached in English or French throughout the journey.
Meknes and Volubilis: do I need a car or can I go by train?
Meknes is around 60 to 70 km from Fes via the A2 motorway (toll), an hour’s drive; the Roman site of Volubilis and the holy town of Moulay Idriss are around 1 h 15 away. By car, you can do all three in a day and come back to sleep in Fes, which the train (which only serves Meknes) and shared taxis do not easily allow. An economy city car is perfect for this loop.
Long-term rental and business
For a month-long stay, an assignment or a trip back home, rates are reduced and the quote is tailored.
Do you offer reduced rates for a rental of a month or more?
Yes. The longer the rental, the lower the daily rate: the quote is based on the model, the period and the exact length of the rental. Send us your dates and the type of vehicle you want on WhatsApp: you will receive a clear, all-inclusive proposal (full insurance, unlimited mileage, 24/7 assistance). The details are on the long-term car rental in Fes page.
Can I extend my rental once I am there?
Yes, on simple request and subject to the vehicle’s availability. Let us know on WhatsApp as soon as you know your new dates, ideally one or two days before the planned end: we check that the car is not booked by another customer and adjust the contract and the price for the extra days, at the rate of the month concerned. If the model is no longer free, we look for a replacement solution with you.
Do you rent to companies and business travellers in Fes?
Yes. For an assignment, a trade fair or a sales trip, we deliver the car to your hotel or office, at the time that suits you, and collect it from the same place. The automatic premium vehicles (Golf 8.5, A-Class, X2, Q3 Sportback) are well suited to these uses, and the free additional driver lets a colleague take over the wheel. For recurring needs or several vehicles, ask for a quote on WhatsApp or by e-mail at contact@costacar.com.
I am a Moroccan living abroad: what are the conditions for a long stay?
The same as for any customer: a driving licence held for more than one year (Moroccan or from your country of residence), national identity card or passport, bank card in the driver’s name, minimum age 21. A large part of our customers come from Europe and Morocco, including many Moroccans living abroad who book before their summer flight and find their car waiting at Fes-Saïss airport or directly at the family home. For a stay of several weeks, ask for the reduced rate: it is often better value than a series of short rentals.
Insurance, assistance and cancellation
Everything is included as standard, assistance answers in English or French at any hour, and cancellation is free.
What do the full insurance and the free additional insurance cover?
Full insurance, included as standard in every rental, covers damage to the vehicle and third-party liability for the duration of the contract, under the conditions set out in the contract handed over at pick-up. The additional insurance, offered during our current promotion, further strengthens this protection. Nothing is offered as an extra when you collect the keys: you do not have to choose between several packages or estimate a risk.
What should I do in the event of a breakdown, accident or puncture?
Get to safety, then call us immediately on +212 673 92 14 21, by phone or WhatsApp, at any hour: 24/7 roadside assistance answers in English or French and organises the recovery. In the event of an accident, note the other driver’s details and notify the authorities if necessary; we guide you step by step through the process. If the vehicle cannot be driven, we provide a replacement vehicle so that your trip can continue.
Can I cancel or change my booking free of charge?
Cancellation is free: a WhatsApp message or a call is all it takes. Changing the dates, the model, the gearbox or the handover location is done the same way, subject to availability; the earlier you let us know, the more options we have to offer you an alternative. As no prepayment is required, there is no refund to wait for.
How does the vehicle inspection work at handover and return?
When the keys are handed over, you walk around the vehicle with our agent: bodywork, interior, equipment and mileage are noted on the contract, jointly and in your presence. On return, the same check is carried out with you, at the agreed place and time. Take your own photos at departure: it is a good habit that protects everyone and avoids any dispute.
